Fascinating story from the National Library of Scotland about the Second Land Utilization Survey of Great Britain (ca. 1958-1974), told from the perspective of two women who participated in it as schoolchildren sixty years ago, but rediscovered the Survey through an article in The Geographer magazine (PDF link; see page 41). The Survey relied on students to collect land use information in their locales; their hand-coloured, annotated maps, and the maps of other participants, have been scanned and uploaded to the NLS website.
