Most online maps use the Web Mercator map projection; ESRI Mapping Center explores using the Winkel Tripel projection instead.
Earth Observatory debunks a Daily Mail headline saying that half of the northern hemisphere was covered in snow by looking at snow coverage in projections other than cylindrical equirectangular.
